I had been a huge Borders customer--but when I joined the Navy, I went straight from boot camp and training to deployment, and when I next hit up a Borders for a good read, it was missing the vibe that pulled a reader in and made them at home.thalassahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08374925649429207429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786474119988979465.post-12824711641576491682011-08-05T04:52:48.325-04:002011-08-05T04:52:48.325-04:00Thanks so much for sharing. Reading this, it'...Thanks so much for sharing. Reading this, it's very clear to me how much you loved working at Border's. I've never set foot in one (none nearby) and have never been a bookseller, but I think I understand what you mean describing your peers there ... I've been an avid reader since I was a young girl and have hundreds of books here at home. And I know that I will never own an e-reader. Reading a book is a sensual experience for me. An electronic device can't duplicate the feel or smell of the paper, the weight of it in my hands, the shadows cast from the lamp behind my shoulder. I'm sure the readers have their place, but they aren't for me. ;)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786474119988979465.post-49888848112113983722011-08-04T15:10:51.679-04:002011-08-04T15:10:51.679-04:00I worked for Borders from 1997 to 2010. We had great control over our displays, and could order books that would sell well in our store. Then "corporate" (ie business majors who had never worked in a bookstore) started taking over everything. Pretty soon every Borders started to look alike. Then they started hiring people who didn't read much (gasp). And don't get me started on the policy where corporate picked a few titles and we had to try to sell those to everyone. Last year I decided I'd had enough and left. Besides, I could see the writing on the wall -- I was surprised they made it through Christmas.Susan F.https://www.blogger.com/profile/16474358806007310638noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786474119988979465.post-89498933709205139702011-08-04T10:08:21.759-04:002011-08-04T10:08:21.759-04:00I also worked in Borders as did my Mom, it was sad...I also worked in Borders as did my Mom, it was sad to see how much it changed from when my Mom started 13 so years ago (and I would beg to go to work with her instead of to school) and when I started 3 years ago. I lasted 2 years before I decided to quit before they could fire me due to my lack of cooperation in forcing people to buy books they didn't want. I'm definitely going to miss Borders.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786474119988979465.post-31420910841115783082011-08-04T08:39:10.468-04:002011-08-04T08:39:10.468-04:00I never had the pleasure of knowing a Borders book...I never had the pleasure of knowing a Borders bookstore in that era. Our local bookstore is a B&N complete with a Starbucks cafe next door and while it used to be a really cool place to go, they reduced the number of "New Age" material, then moved it from the Religion section to a very obscure area of the store. After that insult, I stopped patronizing them. There are no small bookshops in my area, so I'm an Amazon customer. I would love to have the experience that you had as a bookseller and barista :) Thank you so much for sharing this. It puts such a personal touch on the entire Borders closing.Alexis Kennedyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06145923777596112574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786474119988979465.post-61013837971495306412011-08-03T18:48:43.371-04:002011-08-03T18:48:43.371-04:00Sounds like a great place to have worked. I recall going to my local bookstore and often end up helping newbies choose the appropriate book from the "metaphysical" section.Carolina Deanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13576859208144256112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786474119988979465.post-23523750017071171232011-08-03T18:05:46.555-04:002011-08-03T18:05:46.555-04:00I love this post.
